A steady hand for young people who need one.
The Karma Initiative is a nonprofit organization focused on helping vulnerable youth and children — beginning with middle and high school students in Reno, Nevada.
Why we started
Too many young people grow up without a single adult who reliably shows up for them. Not because no one cares, but because the systems around them are stretched thin — overloaded counselors, overwhelmed families, and schools doing far more than teaching.
The Karma Initiative was founded to fill that gap with something simple and hard to fake: presence. A trained, background-checked mentor who returns every week, for a full school year, and treats a young person’s future as worth investing in.
We chose Reno because it is where we live and where the need is visible. We are building here with the intention of proving a model that can travel.
What we hold to
Show up, every week
Consistency is the intervention. A mentor who reappears week after week rebuilds a young person's trust in adults, in institutions, and in themselves.
Dignity before charity
We do not hand out solutions. We build relationships, teach skills, and hand young people the tools to author their own future.
Safeguard fiercely
Every mentor is background-checked and trained. Child safety is a standard we hold above growth, speed, or convenience.
Build for the long horizon
We plan in decades. Every program we launch is designed to outlast us and to be replicable in another city or another country.
Where we are going
Reno is the beginning, not the boundary. As our mentorship program matures, we plan to expand into additional communities and eventually internationally through Homes of Hope — residential communities providing safe housing, education, mentorship, trauma recovery, and long-term support for children in need around the world.
